Hope for „Single Mothers

Kinigi Sewing Center

In 2019, together with a local partner NGO, we established a training center for single mothers in Kinigi. Each year, up to 50 young mothers start their training as seamstresses at the Kinigi Sewing Center. Their children range in age from a few months to two years.

Teenage single mothers often live on the fringes of society with no hope for a good future. If they become pregnant accidentally, they are often outcast by their families. Many of them are traumatized and need psychological support. Our social worker takes care of them. In the community with their fellow mothers, the young women find strength and self-confidence to survive in society as mothers, but also as professionals.

So far, 210 mothers have completed the training course.

Childcare at EDC Kinigi

As family circumstances do not allow them to take care of their children at home, the young mothers bring their babies and toddlers to class. Therefore, it was important for us to take care of the children during the classes and provide them with sufficient and healthy food.

In the beginning, there was only one small room to care for the children. There was no kitchen or covered dining area. In 2023, a new building was constructed, the Early Childhood Development Center (EDC). There is now enough space for professional childcare, allowing the mothers to focus on their education.

This step significantly improves the learning outcomes of the mothers. The development of babies and toddlers can also be optimally supported during this sensitive phase.
